Re: Pre - 1964 Silver Dollars
What pre-1964 Dollar coins are you talking about in particular? While pre-1964 Silver Dollar coins have a silver content of roughly 3/4 oz. AG. They carry a premium over just the melt value (how much of a premium depends on the year and condition of the coin). In addition, pre-1964 coins are legal tender - something silver rounds are not and that is worth extra as well.
Generic Silver Rounds are worth their weight at AG melt price. Certainly there are "Silver Rounds" that carry premiums - some much more than a good number of pre-1964 Dollars. I look at generic silver rounds as being worth their melt value and as a store of REAL money. I look at pre-1964 Silver Dollars as having a silver melt value, are REAL legal tender AND they have a Numismatic Value whereas Silver Rounds still only have Melt Value as their primary function. If you compare a Generic 1 oz. Silver Round .999% AU against a Pre-1964 Silver Dollar with approximately 3/4 oz. of Silver, it is a no-brainer that the Generic Silver Round is worth more AT MELT VALUE. Look beyond that and you will see that the advantage belongs firmly to the pre-1964 Silver Dollar. Look, hairs can be split "but I know of a (not legal tender) silver ""round"" that sold for more than 20 times its melt value" and "I know of a pre-1964 "Junk" Silver dollar, legal tender, that sold under its OWN Silver melt value". These are special circumstances and have actually happened. However, if you came to me and wanted to swap some of your Silver Rounds .999 pure for some of my Pre-1964 Dollars (straight across), I would not swap with you - even though I gain more silver with each Pre-1964 Silver Dollar I swap for a 1 0z. Generic Silver Round that is .999% pure. The value of a Pre-1964 Silver Dollar is still higher than a Generic 1 oz.999 Silver Round. Another thing is that you really do not KNOW for certain is the silver content and purity of a Generic Silver Round/Bar stamped 1 ounce of .999% Pure Silver - as so many counterfeit Silver Rounds have flooded the market. There are far fewer counterfeit Pre-1964 Silver Dollars, and counterfeit Pre-1964 Dollars are fairly easy to spot whereas you would have to do a content and Silver purity test on the "Silver" Bars or Rounds - each and every one of them - before you would actually KNOW for certain the Silver Weight and Purity of the Generic Silver. It is just not worth it to trade Pre-1964 Dollars for Generic Silver. Besides, the Pre-1964 Dollars have character, which is generally lacking with the Generic Silver. Now, with all of that said, I am a Silver Bug. I hold Silver Rounds/Bars/Special Issues, Collections, AND Pre-1964 Silver Dollars. I just wanted to let you know that I am not biased against Generic Silver and that I have two Dogs in this fight - Generic Silver and Pre-1964 Dollars. Personally speaking, I would never trade a Pre-1964 Silver Dollar for a Generic .999% pure 1 oz. Round or Bar, however, I would LOVE to trade you some of my Generic 1 oz. Silver Rounds straight across for your Pre-1964 Silver Dollars. Call me when you would do THAT trade with me. Now, does this answer your question? JR |
Re: Pre - 1964 Silver Dollars
thanks much for your reply! i know someone that wants to get 'payment' in a pre-1964 silver dollar .. and only that. NO .999 silver 'rounds'. i just didnt know why, but now you've shed some light on the subject. <g>
note- my coin dealer just said he'd do an even swap of a silver roudn for a (not the best condition) pre-1964 dollar. |

That piece has great character.
It's a very interesting "debate" and thanks all for the discussion. |
Re: Pre - 1964 Silver Dollars
I love Morgans, though I think the design was artistically lacking. Morgan's Miss Liberty is kinda' butch and only has half a head (not quite as bad as Barber's work, though). However, I still love them. They were my first introduction to obsolete issues when I was a kid.
I favor better dates in VF condition (and up) or more common date MS coins with nice toning. When it comes to worn "junk" Morgans I'm on the fence. I have a few rolls, but I really don't hold them any more dear than SAE's. I'd keep the junk Morgans over generic rounds, but probably let them go before my SAE's. |
